The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Lago Vista 9-6 in District 24-4A play April 12.
The Lady Vikings took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lady Mustangs tied it 2-2 in the second.
“We went small ball, and they were forced to play small,” head coach Alex Lozoya said. “We took advantage of Lago Vista errors.”
The Lady Vikings regained the lead thanks to a hit by a “dead-pull hitter, who yanks the ball to wherever her strong side is,” the coach said.
“She drove it to where we weren’t at and cleared the bases,” he said.
The Lady Mustangs answered in the fifth to tie the contest at 6-6. Freshman shortstop Jocelyn Suarez reached base on an error, while junior second baseman Kylie Roberts was walked. An error on a hit by sophomore Cheyenne Thompson brought her teammates home. Thompson scored on an error.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lago Vista reached base on a ground ball error and a hit by a pitch. Runners moved over on a bunt. Then a ball hit into a gap brought them home.
“Honestly, the whole night was disappointing,” Lozoya said. “The frustrating part was how uncharacteristic our offense was on the night. We put the ball in play more often than not to create pressure on them. It all happened in a hurry, especially at the end. The top of our lineup struggled to put the ball in play.”
He credited Lago Vista pitcher Winter Callahan for her work in the circle.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if she got the district’s Newcomer of the Year,” he said.
As for his team’s defense, Lozoya said it made plays, just not enough for seven innings. In all, Lago Vista scored 5 unearned runs.
“The defense had some good moments,” Lozoya said. “Jocelyn made some good plays, Kylie made some outstanding plays. (Junior pitcher) Camille Catalfamo for the most part was up and around the zone enough. Our pitching and defense weren’t good enough in clutch situations to get us out of jams.”
Marble Falls welcomes Burnet Tuesday, April 16, to end the season with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
